Local Governance for Jumbo Glacier Resort
Regional
District Votes to Create Mountain Resort Municipality for Jumbo Glacier Resort
August 8, 2009
INVERMERE, BC --On August 7th, 2009, the Regional District of East Kootenay
requested again, as it did in 1996, that at the conclusion of the provincial
review processes, a local governance structure be formed for the Jumbo Glacier
Resort project to implement the approved Master Plan, the Environmental Certificate
requirements and the land use decision of the East Kootenay CORE Table (recommendation
#75), a public and local land use designation process that was the basis of
the following fifteen years of public process.
To propose a rezoning process as a measure of democracy at the conclusion
of the nineteen years of process for this project is, to say the least, contradictory.
The vote of the RDEK on the August 7th motion was in the direction of real
democracy.
The democratic process is slow, but the regional district directors with their
vote ensured that it will achieve a fair conclusion. Glacier Resorts Ltd. is
pleased that this vote opens the way for a local governance structure that
can ensure a successful start of the project, the future certainty of land
use promised at the beginning of the process by the East Kootenay CORE Table
decision and the necessary confidence in the approval system for the projects
that meet democratically established objectives.
Jumbo Glacier Resort will be the premier mountain resort in North
America, with year round skiing, in the right climatic zone and at the right
elevations to ensure snow without snow making and environmental sustainability
in the future.
